Gaya Local Government Area, Nigeria

TIME:2026-05-25 15:59

Gaya is one of the local government areas (LGAs) in Kano State, Nigeria, covering 613 square kilometers, with its administrative seat in Gaya town. As of the 2006 census, it had a population of around 201,016, which was estimated to rise to about 341,100 by 2022. The LGA is governed by an elected chairman and council members, managing infrastructure, health, and education in the area.

Gaya is a cradle of Kano civilization. Historical accounts suggest Bagauda, the founder of Kano Kingdom, passed through Gaya before settling in Dala. It predates Kano’s establishment and has deep historical ties to the kingdom.

The economy is agriculture-based, with major crops like rice, maize, millet, peanuts, cucumbers, and watermelons. Livestock farming is also prominent. Gaya is a cultural hub known for its traditional festivals like the Sallah Durbar, wrestling, and archery events. In summary, Gaya LGA is a historically rich administrative district, blending traditional emirate governance with elected leadership, maintaining strong cultural and political significance.
