Bhola Municipality, Bangladesh

TIME:2026-05-25 16:01

Bhola Municipality is a major urban center and the administrative headquarters of Bhola District in the Barisal Division of Bangladesh. Located in the north of Bhola Island — the largest island in Bangladesh — it borders the Bay of Bengal to the south. The municipality covers 22.7 km², with an estimated population of 59,700 in 2020 and a density of approximately 4,100 people/km².

Governed by a mayor and municipal council, Bhola Municipality comprises 9 wards and about 19 mahallas. It is the most urbanized area among the district’s five sub-municipalities. Being low-lying (2–3 meters above sea level), the town is vulnerable to flooding and cyclones. The town has about 75.7 km of roads, 177 km of drainage canals, and relies heavily on riverine transport.

Its economy revolves around trade and fisheries, with surrounding markets supporting agricultural and marine product commerce. The literacy rate was about 76% in 2011, above the regional average. Bhola is a key administrative and commercial center, linking southern Bangladesh’s waterway network, and remains resilient in the face of climate challenges.
