Kurunegala is a district in the Northwest Province of Sri Lanka. Covering an area of 4,771 square kilometers, it has a population of 1,460,215. The municipality of Kurunegala, as its capital, is a vibrant and diverse cultural hub that is steeped in history and tradition. The city is home to many different ethnic and religious groups, and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Kurunegala is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, and its unique blend of traditional and modern influences. 

Kurunegala was first established in the 12th century by the Chola Dynasty, and it quickly became a major trading center for the surrounding region. The city was a major hub for the spice and gem trade, and it was an important stop on the Silk Road. In the 15th century, Kurunegala was conquered by the Portuguese, who built a fort in the city. The Portuguese were eventually driven out by the Dutch, who held control of the city until the British took it in 1796. 

Kurunegala is also home to a number of traditional arts and crafts, such as pottery, weaving, and wood carving.
