China-Pakistan Economic Corridor creates 190,000 jobs over 9 years: official

Beijing, November 16 (ECNS/Wang Enbo) –Meng Wei, spokesperson of the National Development and Reform Commission of China said on November 16 in Beijing that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC), a pilot project of the Belt and Road Initiative, had yielded fruitful results, creating a total of  190,000 jobs over the past 9 years.

At the press conference of National Development and Reform Commission, Meng Wei said that, led by the heads of state of the two countries, the mechanism of Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) on the CPEC was established in 2013. The JCC meets once a year in principle,  and has formed the 1+4 cooperation pattern with the CPEC development as the core and Gwadar port, energy, infrastructure, and industries as the key points. In recent years, the two sides have expanded their cooperation to the fields of science and technology, agriculture, society, people's livelihood, and information technology industries. 

In October of 2022, the year that marks the 9th anniversary of the joint development of the CPEC, the National Development and Reform Commission of China and the Ministry of Planning,Development & Special Initiatives of Pakistan jointly convened the 11th meeting of the JCC. Representatives of Chinese and Pakistani governments, enterprises, institutions and financial organizations attended the meeting, which reviewed achievements made since the 10th meeting held in the previous year and planned the future work. 

Meng Wei pointed out that the relevant achievements are mainly in the fields of transportation infrastructure, energy,  industrial development, agriculture, social development and livelihood. 

The cooperation outcome can be represented by completion of the Gwadar East Bay Expressway project, the start of the construction of the China-funded Gwadar Seawater Desalination Project, and the smooth operation of the well received Orange Line Metro Rail Transit System Lahore and the Peshawar-Karachi Expressway (Sukkur-Multan section). In addition, with the Carlot Hydropower Station completely put into business operation, the CPEC energy cooperation projects in business operation has totaled 12 and is providing one third of Pakistans power supply. Meanwhile, China is proactively giving aid to Pakistan's fight against the flood and its reconstruction after the disaster. 

Next, the two sides will jointly implement the consensus between the leaders of the two countries, accelerate the cooperation in the fields of agriculture, mining, information technology, society and people's livelihood, and promote the high-quality construction of the CPEC, said the spokesperson.
