TIME:2021-07-30 17:08

BEIJING, July 19 (People's Daily) -- On July 18, on the occasion of the extended 44th session of the World Heritage Committee, a side event on the theme of the "Maritime Silk Road Heritage Research and Conservation" hosted by the National Cultural Heritage Administration was held in Fuzhou. Mr. Song Xinchao, Deputy Director General of the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA), Dr. Jing Feng, Chief of the Asia and the Pacific Unit at UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, and Ms. Theresa Patricio, President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), attended the meeting and delivered speeches.

Mr. Song Xinchao pointed out that in recent years, China has achieved a series of positive results in the protection, research, display, interpretation and international exchanges on the heritage of Maritime Silk Road (MSR). He said that China would continue to strengthen international consultation and cooperation with UNESCO, other international organizations, and countries along the MSR, to cooperatively protect the heritage, carry out thematic researches, and explore approaches to international joint application for the World Heritage status of the MSR, working together to protect, carry forward and utilize this common historical and cultural treasure of all mankind.

Dr. Jing Feng reviewed the "Integral Study of the Silk Roads: Roads of Dialogue" project carried out by UNESCO and the series of work on the application for World Heritage status of the Silk Road, which has been initiated with the above-mentioned project as an opportunity. He believed that this is the result of decades of coordination and joint protection, which has set a feasible precedent. Also, he encouraged relevant countries to continue the exchanges and cooperation under the framework of the Silk Road.

Ms. Theresa Patricio said that the application of the World Heritage status of the MSR needs a temporal-spacial framework with better dialogue, mutual respect and understanding. Meanwhile, there should be an overall strategy that will define each heritage site’s contribution to the MSR’s outstanding universal value, as well as the connections between them, including their relationship in the process of changing. She pointed out that this side event marked a significant step forward, and more studies should be carried out on the framework of the MSR.

Mr. Chai Xiaoming, Director of the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage (CACH), stated in his speech that the CACH, as the main institution of professional support for the research on the protection of Chinese historic sites along the MSR, will, under the guidance of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, continue to provide services and link well the heritage sites and relevant provinces and cities, and offer professional technical support for the protection and research of the MSR, telling Chinese stories well and making positive contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

According to sources, this side event was an important activity of international academic exchanges in the field of MSR protection and research. The protection and research of the MSR is not only a Chinese mission, but also a common cause of countries along the MSR. Under the UNESCO "Silk Road" heritage framework, China stands ready to work together with all countries concerned to promote the protection of MSR heritage under multilateral frameworks and build a diversified exchange and cooperation system for cultural heritage.
