Three New Members Joined 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee

21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee has received membership application forms from several cities of different countries this year. It has been decided by the standing committee of 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee that Jayapura, Kalpitiya, and Beruwala, were officially accepted as new member cities. By December 2019, the number of the member cities has increased to 56.

  Jayapura

Jayapura is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Papua. It is situated on the island of New Guinea. It covers an area of 935.92 square kilometers, and borders the nation of Papua New Guinea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the north. It is the most populous city in the Indonesian part of New Guinea with a population of 315,872 at the 2014 census.

About 80% of the local residents are from other areas of Indonesia, while Papuans account for about 20% of the total population. Jayapura was established on September 21, 1993. The city is divided into five districts with 39 villages.

Jayapura has a tropical rain forest climate, with an average temperature of 27 ℃. The temperature varies during the rainy and dry seasons. The city's topography is complex and diverse, including coastal plains and hills of which the altitude is above 700 meters above sea level.

Jayapura is the fourth largest city by economy in Eastern Indonesia. It is also the second-most expensive Indonesian city to live in, after Jakarta. The city is served by Sentani Airport, located near Lake Sentani. A highway connects the city to Skouw, a village near the border with Papua New Guinea and continues beyond the border to Vanimo. The government is currently planning to build a railway from Jayapura to Sarmi. 

The Papua New Guinea Independent State has a consulate general in Jayapura. Cenderawasih University was established in 1962 in Jayapura,which is an important educational institution in the province of Papura.

  Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is located in Puttalam district, North Western province of Sri Lanka. It consists of 14 islands. It has a total area of 16.73 square kilometers. The total population was 64,910 (2009). The people of Kalpitiya are mostly fishermen.

It is unrivaled marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats ranging from bar reefs, flat coastal plains ,mangrove swamps, and vast sand dune beaches.

It is known for its natural environment and now developing as a tourist destination. Kalpitiya allows viewing large pods of Dolphins as well as Whales. Boat trips are regularly taken from the Kalpitiya peninsula to an off-shore site away from the reef to catch sight of sperm whales.

Kalpitiya is nominally the best location for kite surfing and snorkeling in the country as there is the largest coral reef in Sir Lanka (Bar reef). Apart from that, when it comes to the places to visit Kalpitiya, the Dutch Fort and St.Peter's Kerk church in the town are interesting examples of Sir Lanka's rich history and colonel past.

Beruwala

Beruwala is a town in Kalutara District, Western Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an Urban Council with a total area of approximately 15 square kilometers and total population of 75,000 (2019) . The majority of its residence are Muslims. However, the Budhdhist, Christian and Muslim communities work together in peace and harmony towards achieving the common goal of developing the city. 

Beruwala is located on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, 60 km (37 mi) south of Colombo. The Beruwala railway station is located on the Coastal Line, connecting Colombo to Matara. 

Beruwala is surrounded by beautiful beaches and therefore, is a tourist destination.Beruwala also holds the oldest mosque in Sri Lanka. There is a fully functioning harbour and the Maradana area has a dock. The residents are mostly involved in fisheries, farming and gem business.

The Mayor of Beruwala is Mr. Mohamed Mazahim Mohamed. He has been elected as the Mayor of the city for the fourth time by its residents. Within 1.5 years of appointment many development projects have been successfully completed, which led to Mr. Mazahim winning the award for best Mayor of the Western Province, Sri Lanka, by both the Prime Minister and the President.
