The Bandar Lampung City is a member of the UCLG-ASPAC and the Metropolises. Located approximately 165 kms northwest of Jakarta, Bandar Lampung is the capital and largest city of Lampung, the southern-most province on the island of Sumatra. Bandarlampung is an amalgamation of two separate towns: Tanjungkarang on the northern hilly areas and Teluk Betung on the coast of the southern Lampung Bay. In 1990, the two towns, along with the Panjang area, converged into a single integrated city. Traveling between the 2 main areas only takes about 30-40 minutes by car.

The city acts as an inter-island hub and main port gateway to Sumatra from Java. The outer port, Panjang, on the southeast side of Teluk Betung, is connected to the Merak Port on Java Island. The railways and highways go north to Palembang, Jambi and other places. Agricultural and mineral products and livestock from provinces in southern Sumatra, such as Lampung, Palembang and Bengkulu, are traded and transshipped here. The city also exports tea, coffee, rubber, pepper, cinchona, plant fiber, silver, etc. Javanese immigrants and various materials also enter through this place. The city is also a must-pass for visitors making trips to the Way Kambas National Park, the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, the still active remnants of Krakatau Mountain, and many other attractions that found throughout the Lampung Province. 

As the fourth largest city in Sumatra, Bandarlampung plays a pivotal role in the development and economic activities of the island. There are family industrial workshops in the area, working in wood processing, metal utensil making, basket weaving, manual weaving, pottery and brick making, etc. A fishing port and an oil refinery were built in the 1970s.
