Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) has its office located in Wellington, New Zealand. The LGNZ National Council is the elected leadership of LGNZ. To guide best practice governance, the Local Government New Zealand National Council has eight sub committees in place. Membership of LGNZ is divided into zones and sectors. LGNZ is made up of six areas - all of which strive to make LGNZ the best organisation it can be.

LGNZ aims at achieving local democracy powering community and national success. Its policy priorities are: (1) governance; (2) six big issues (infrastructure and funding, risk and resilience, environmental, social, economic and cultural); (3) housing; (4) environment; (5) climate change; (6) transport; and (7) local democracy (localizing).
