“A bite of sweet potato carries warmth for seven generations.” Introduced in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) by a native of Changle district in Fuzhou called Chen Zhenlong, sweet potatoes have been cultivated and promoted in Changle for centuries. Local farmers developed a complete system of sweet potato farming that enabled large-scale planting across China, turning it into a vital food crop. Beyond sustaining food security, sweet potatoes contributed to biodiversity and soil and water conservation. For countless families, their sweetness became a cherished winter memory. Today, the Changle sweet potato continues the legacy of farming culture, writing new legends of sweetness and standing as a “golden treasure” of rural revitalization.
