In marine environments, China has established 169 national-level marine ranches, with 56.6 million cubic meters of deep-sea aquaculture water producing 470,000 tons annually. Inland, standardized pond farming has improved significantly, alongside the flourishing of cold-water farming, rice field aquaculture, and saline-alkali water aquaculture. Currently, the aquaculture-to-capture ratio of China's aquatic production has risen from 75:25 at the beginning of the 13th Five-Year Plan to 82:18, with aquaculture accounting for nearly 60% of the global total.
Despite the growth in overall aquatic production, challenges remain, including “insufficient space, low efficiency, and unstable foundations.”
Yuan Xiaochu, Deputy Director of the Fisheries and Fisheries Administration, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, noted that “the Ministry will expedite the implementation of key leading and exemplary projects such as distant-water fisheries, marine ranches, fishery port economic zones, and the green circular development of fisheries. We will continue to strengthen resource conservation, uphold safety boundaries, and comprehensively advance fishery modernization.”
In addition, the number of key aquatic wildlife species protected at the national level has reached 458, an increase of 410 species since 1989.
