On January 23rd, a ceremony was held in Lagos State in Southwest Nigeria to inaugurate the Lekki Deep Sea Port, which is invested, constructed and run by the China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Cui Jianchun and Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu attended the ceremony.

Buhari said at the ceremony that the completion of the project will open up new possibilities for national economic growth, emphasizing there are now limitless opportunities for the country's exports, especially agro-allied products in the international marketplace, growth of local jobs to improve poverty alleviation, and increase in foreign exchange inflow.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Cui Jianchun said the landmark gateway project is a fitting example of Chinese enterprisesshift in roles, from a contractor to an investor and operator. This port is expected to become the most modernized and efficient port in sub-Saharan Africa, and a new engine of economic development that will empower the whole country.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the Lekki Deep Sea Port, as the largest port in Nigeria, can accommodate the currently largest container ship in the world, and as it begins operation, the port will greatly drive foreign trade, unlock the country's economic potential, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

the Lekki Deep Sea Port is the first modern deep sea port of Nigeria, as well as the largest port in west Africa. The port broke ground in June 2020, and was completed in October 2022. It is designed to handle 1.2 million TEU every year.
