Faced with the Global Climate Crisis, Nations Must “Cooperate or Perish”, Says the UN Secretary General.

TIME:2022-11-11 16:40

According to the CCTV News on November 8th, the UN Secretary General Guterres expressed on 7th that “our planet is fast approaching tipping points”. Facing the global climate crisis, which brought tremendous losses in the economy and the international relationship, all nations must “cooperate or perish.”

On November 7th, the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Natioins Framework Convention on Climate Change opened in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. More than 100 leaders of states or governments were present. Guterres delivered a speech on the summit, saying that “we are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator”.

“It is either a Climate Solidarity Pact — or a Collective Suicide Pact,” he said.

Egyptian President El-Sisi urged the developed countries to honor their pledge to help the developing countries that suffered the most from the climate crisis. As the host country, Egypt called this conference as “Implementation Summit” to promote the implementation of the commitment to tackle the global climate crisis, El-Sisi said.

“It is, therefore, necessary for developing countries, especially in our African continent, to feel that their priorities are addressed and taken into consideration. These countries bear their responsibilities, to the best of their abilities and the amount of appropriate support and finance,” El-Sisi pointed out.

“Time is pressing and there is no room to retreat,” he said.

The COP 27 will be held in Egypt's coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh from November 6th to 18th.

Guterres said that the climate change comes with a cost and we are all in the fight for our lives.

Guterres called for people to take actions and adopt a plan to combat the climate crisis, which brings dangers to 3.5 billion people in the world. The greenhouse gas emissions are threatening the earth. The COP 27 must agree on a roadmap to tackle climate change.

Guterres called for nations to come together for implementation.
