Mawei District Expands and Strengthens Its Marine Industry (Excerpt)

TIME:2021-09-03 15:51

Fuzhou’s prosperity lies in its rivers and sea. The Mawei District of Fuzhou is home to the world's largest distant-water fishing fleet - the fleet of Fuzhou Honglong Marine Fisheries Company. Mawei’s ocean-going fishing vessels can be seen on all of the world’s oceans. In Africa, Mawei people built a fishery base whose land area ranks first among all of China’s overseas fishery bases; in Indian Ocean, Mawei people steer their vessels to harvest deep-sea fish.

With its economic emphasis on the real economy, Mawei District makes every effort to support large leading enterprises, cultivate large industrial clusters and develop major industries, to accelerate the construction of a modern industrial system with high quality, great efficiency and strong driving force. In terms of its integration with the "Marine Fuzhou" strategy, Mawei District is implementing the "Marine Mawei" Three-Year Action Plan for the High-Quality Development of Marine Economy. In addition to building a specialized port for ocean-going fishery, Mawei District will extend the marine industry chain with focuses on links of distant-water fishing, cold chain, deep processing, trading, etc., by accelerating the introduction of businesses in fields of marine biology, coastal tourism, maritime finance, marine transportation, etc., and cultivating and expanding key aquatic products processing enterprises. Mawei will build a national-level major cold chain industrial park with an area above a thousand mu and a value above a hundred billion yuan, in support of burnishing the international brand name of ‘Marine Fuzhou’.

Until now, Mawei District is already home to over 30 large-scale aquatic products processing enterprises, such as Haiwenming and Minyang Jellyfish. Fo Tiao Qiang ("Buddha Jumps the Wall" Stew) is known as the most famous specialty of Fujian cuisine, featuring high-quality ingredients and a complicated cooking process. But the instant Fo Tiao Qiang developed by Haiwenming can be eaten after only a simple heating step. This year, the product has completed its registration at the US Food & Drug Administration, and obtained the qualification for export to the European Union. Another popular food in Fuzhou is jellyfish, which has to soak in water for half a day before becoming eatable. But the instant jellyfish deeply processed by Minyang Jellyfish Company needs no soaking, and can be served out of the package, which even comes with a tray for easy outdoor consumption.

Mawei will stick to seeking development through reform and innovation. Aiming at all-round marine development, Mawei District is to grow the marine industry, boost the marine economy, and better communicate to the world the story of its marine development. Not only will it further expand its aquatic products trading market, but also promote integrated development to forge a marine economy with a complete industrial chain.
