Vice Mayor Li Chun Attended and Addressed the China-Brazil Video Conference on the Prevention and Control of COVID-19

On the evening of June 3, 2020, the “China-Brazil Video Conference on Prevention and Control of COVID-19”, jointly organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (hereinafter referred to as “CPAFFC”) and the Brazilian Mayors' Front (FNP), was held online in Beijing, Fuzhou, Yangzhou, Wuhan and Brazil. Mayors and experts from China and Brazil shared their experience and practices on the prevention and control of COVID-19 as well as the resumption of work and production. Shen Xin, director-general of Department of American & Oceanian Affairs of CPAFFC, vice mayor of Fuzhou City, vice mayor of Yangzhou City, mayor of Aparecida de Goiânia, Brazil and vice mayor of San Luis, Brazil, as well as Wuhan experts in disease control and prevention participated in the meeting, which was broadcast live on Facebook.

China and Brazil have a long history of economic, trade and cultural exchanges, as well as a deep friendship. Virus knows no borders, but the worst of times reveals the best in people. At present, the pandemic in Brazil has reached the most critical time, and Fuzhou is willing to maintain close contact with Brazil and strengthen exchanges in epidemic control & prevention and urban governance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic and trade cooperation between China and Brazil provides both opportunities and challenges. We hope that both parties will continue to deepen the exchanges and cooperation with each other. We believe that both China and Brazil will overcome the pandemic through collaboration.” said Vice Mayor Li Chun in her speech.

Experts from Yangzhou shared with Brazilian side the specific practices of the prevention and control of COVID-19 pandemic. Wuhan experts in disease control and prevention also gave a detailed introduction on how Wuhan implemented the policy of “All suspected and confirmed patients should be admitted to the hospital, all confirmed patients should be treated”.

During the interaction session, mayors and experts from China and Brazil had an in-depth discussion on several topics, including adopting and implementing quarantine during the epidemic, reducing the negative impact of the epidemic on economic development, supporting small, medium and micro enterprises to withstand the impact of the epidemic, coping with the possible resurgence of the epidemic and restoring the socio-economic order, etc.

The mayor of Aparecida de Goiânia and the vice mayor of San Luis appreciated China for introducing prevention and control measures and sharing their experience in fighting the virus. They believed that the Chinese government had made great efforts in fighting COVID-19 pandemic, which provided a great lesson for Brazil. Therefore, they hoped to keep in touch with the Chinese cities to promote international cooperation in fighting the epidemic and achieve the final victory together.

In his closing speech, Director-General Shen Xin expressed his gratitude to the mayors and experts from China and Brazil for their active participation in the discussion. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are now fully aware that the interests of all countries are entwined with each other and no country is immune to it. At present, it is imperative for all countries to strengthen global governance and enhance international coordination. Only by building a community of shared future and continually assisting each other can we defeat the common enemy to humanity. It is hoped that China and Brazil would take this video conference as an opportunity for connection and continue to collaborate with each other, so as to make contributions to the health and friendship of the two peoples,” he said.
